This course aims to teach learners how to care for someone suffering from Dementia and how to ensure that person maintains their independence and freedom while maximising their dignity and quality of life.

  • The importance of involving family members and offering support
  • How to communicate appropriately with someone with dementia
  • The role of medication
  • The key principles of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

What is Dementia?

Dementia refers to a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they have become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.
